Getting the Finger In Kohler......
Among the tremendous occurrences during the week of the PGA Championship, one still stands out amongst the groups of Instructors (from the PGA Center for Learning and Performance) who made the journey to spend hours and hours of time with thousands of PGA Championship Spectators. The Finger. Specifically the index finger of the right hand pointing (extended) straight down the grip of the putter toward the Putterhead.

I am not sure who, or how this phenomenon took off in Wisconsin- but for every 10 people we saw in our Mercedes-Benz Putting Performance Center, 9 (and even maybe 9.5) exhibited this malaise. I would like to meet the person who started this exquisite grip adjustment and ...well let's just say "enable them to count to 9". The Pointeroo or Wisconsin Wobbler as we came to call it sure did catch on- but then again so did the bubonic plague- and the only difference here is that in one thing ended up in a hole in the ground and in putting your ball is still looking at you!

Here is the quick scoop- watch the pros, mens, ladies, seniors, juniors, left handed, etc--do you see them doing this. No, nuff said. But in case you need more ammo- in reality while it may look like it helps you line the face up and push the putter shaft down the line toward the hole, there is this finite thing called pressure. When pressure arrives that handy little guide you got yourself there turns into some sort of satanic amoeba and simply does two (2) things. It pushes the putter away from a level hitting surface to a glancing upwards blow at the ball, and (2) it twists the face. Hmm, non-solid hit, with a crooked face. Do yourself a favor, take back the finger and I will take back all of my sarcasm in this piece, and we will both know that you will be smiling upon the green when you're putting gets back to great!

"Wisconsin's wonderful wedge week"

I can say that my experience in Wisconsin for the PGA Championship has strengthened my resolve to preach wedge fitting. I have never seen a course design and set up in all of my years that created as many different challenges for the short shots. Add to this, course conditions with high and varied rough, very steep terrain and slope, particularly around the green sites, as well as varied weather and turf conditions and the best players in the world had their hands full.

I see too many of my student's bags with 45 degree pitching wedges and 55 degree sand wedges and nothing else in the bottom of the set. The limitations this creates in short game options at your home course, let alone, a masterpiece like Whistling Straights is creating too many frustrating score cards. Bubba Watson, for instance, carries a pitching wedge plus 52, 56 and 63 degree wedges. He was prepared for Whistling Straights variety and nearly had the Wanamaker Trophy won in a memorable playoff.

If the course you play has, shall we say, creative terrain around the green sites, you need more variety in your wedges. If your course does not have large slope, think about more variety in your wedges anyway. Ask your PGA Professional about your options and do not forget about variety in the bounce angles for hard and soft conditions too.

Reasons For Ravens Pass Rush Slowdown

Baltimore notched 37 sacks through the first 11 games, and finished with three in the final five.



On Nov. 10 at M&T Bank Stadium, the Ravens roughed up Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton.

They hit him eight times. They sacked him five times. Outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil alone notched three sacks.

The Ravens’ Week 17 rematch against Cincinnati shows just how much the pass rush changed by the end of the year.

Baltimore never hit Dalton.

The Ravens began the year on a torrid sack streak. They led the AFC in sacks and were on pace to break the franchise record of 60 (2006). Dumervil and Terrell Suggs were threatening to break the record of most sacks between a duo of 24, set by Trevor Pryce and Adalius Thomas that same year.

By year’s end, the Ravens finished tied for 16th in the league with 40 sacks. Suggs and Dumervil had just one sack each over the final seven weeks of the season.

The Ravens had 37 sacks through their first 11 games. They finished with three in their final five.

“To start off with all those sacks, then to slow down at the end of the season, was something that was disappointing for us,” Head Coach John Harbaugh said during Tuesday’s season-ending press conference.

Harbaugh gave a two-fold explanation for the sack drop-off.

First, the ankle injury Dumervil suffered in Week 13 against Pittsburgh slowed him for the rest of the year. Dumervil missed one game (Minnesota) and was limited from then on.

“That was something that he fought through, but that was a little bit tough for him,” Harbaugh said.

Harbaugh did not offer an explanation for Suggs’ pass-rush absence. After notching nine sacks in his first eight games, he had just one (against New England’s Tom Brady) in the final eight.

The other reason, Harbaugh said, was that opponents adjusted to the Ravens’ hot start and began getting the ball out quicker to avoid taking sacks. That made Baltimore start playing more coverage. The Ravens relied more on their secondary.

Harbaugh pointed to the final game in Cincinnati as an example of how the game plan changed.

“In the Cincinnati game, we played more coverage – which [Defensive Coordinator] Dean [Pees] knows I’m not a big fan of,” Harbaugh said. “I like blitzing. To me, we’re a blitzing team, we’re a pressure team.

“Yet, we get four interceptions, because [Dalton’s] getting the ball out fast, and our guys are playing coverage, and we’re doubling certain guys, and we’re changing up our coverage patterns back there. I thought our guys did a good job with that.”

Still, Harbaugh said the Ravens need to find a way to maintain their strong pass rush no matter what opponents are doing to counteract it.

“We’ve got to make sure we can do that throughout the course of the season and keep hitting quarterbacks, because if you do that, you’re going to be successful,” he said.

＜WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ　2日目◇1日◇シャーシャン・インターナショナルGC(7,266ヤード・パー72)＞

　初日3オーバーの64位タイと出遅れた藤田寛之は、この日3バーディ・1ボギーの“70”でスコアを2つ伸ばしトータル1オーバーの49位タイに浮上した。

　INから出た藤田は13番でボギーが先行するも短いパー4の16番でバーディを奪い返して前半を終える。後半は2番パー5で3打目を2メートルにつけてバーディを奪うと、8番パー5でも3打目をベタピンにつけてバーディを奪取。「アンダーパーで回りたいと思っていたので、ノルマを達成できたかな」と安どの表情を浮かべた。

　球筋をフェードに戻そうと試行錯誤を続けているショットに、この日はわずかながら光が見えた。「後半は良かったけど、もっと安定してできるようにしたいし、まだ安心感はない」と自己評価は厳しかったが、この日は94.44％と高いパーオン率をマーク。後半はフェアウェイも1度しか外さないなど尻上がりに安定感を増した。

　それでも悩み深き男の満足度は低い。「今日はアンダーでしたけど、これが続いていけば次のステップに行ける。今は階段を上っている状態ではなくて、踊り場で上ろうかどうしようか迷っているところ」。ホールアウト後は日が傾くまで練習場でボールを打ち続け自分のスイングと向き合った。

　昨年の賞金王も今季は国内ツアーでも優勝争いは数えるほどしかなく、ランキングでも23位に甘んじている。だが、このまま終わるつもりはない。「これでシーズンを終わるのはさみしい。あと2、3回は優勝争いをしたい。すべての原因はショット。ショットが戻れば…」。44歳はもがきながら懸命の復調の道を探し続けている。

49位タイに踏みとどまった川村が気になるのは…

＜WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ　2日目◇1日◇シャーシャン・インターナショナルGC(7,266ヤード・パー72)＞

　「WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ」の2日目。1オーバーの52位タイからスタートした川村昌弘は2バーディ・2ボギーの“72”でスコアを伸ばせずトータル1オーバー49位タイで2日目を終えた。

　ショットとパットがかみ合わず好調ながら1オーバーで終えた初日から一転、この日は耐えて耐えてのパープレーだった。曲がるティショットの処理に苦しみスコアを伸ばせない展開で、2つのバーディの後いずれもボギーを叩くなど最後まで波に乗れずフィニッシュ。それでも「スコアを伸ばせる展開ではなかった。よく頑張ったパープレーだと思う」。一歩間違えば大叩きもあった状態ながら、「ロングパットの距離感が良くて、微妙なパットも決められた」とグリーン上でしのいでのパープレーを評価した。

　リーダーボードの上位を見渡せば12アンダー、7アンダーとビッグスコアが並ぶ。それでも、川村の自然体は変わらない。「スコアも出ているけど、でも僕はまだそれを見て何かを感じるほどじゃない。ボードを見る余裕もないし、1つでも上を目指していきたい」と淡々と自分のゴルフに集中していく構えだ。

　だが、そんなマイペースな20歳も1つだけ気になるのが明日のペアリング。同スコアに藤田寛之がいるため「藤田さんだといつもと変わらないので(笑)」と笑顔を浮かべつつ、「面白い人と回れたら嬉しいですね」とめったに回る機会のない海外選手とのペアリングを熱望した。誰と回るにせよ、大舞台で国際色豊かな面々と回ることは20歳の成長の糧となっていくことは間違いない。

＜WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ　3日目◇2日◇シャーシャン・インターナショナルGC(7,266ヤード・パー72)＞

　中国で開催中の「WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ」の3日目。2日目に10バーディを奪い単独首位に躍り出たダスティン・ジョンソン（米国）は、この日も前半6バーディ・ノーボギーと2日連続のバーディラッシュ、スコアを通算18アンダーまで伸ばし2位と5打差をつけ、前半を折り返した。

　そのジョンソンを5打差で追うのは昨年の覇者・イアン・ポールター（イングランド）。ホールターは7バーディ・ノーボギーとこちらもバーディを量産。7つ伸ばし通算13アンダーで単独2位に浮上した。

　続く通算10アンダー単独3位にはドイツのマーティン・カイマー。通算9アンダー4位タイにはグラハム・デラート（カナダ）、グレアム・マクドウェル（北アイルランド）、ブー・ウィークリー（米国）の3人がつける。

　初日、首位に立ったローリー・マキロイ（北アイルランド）は1つ伸ばし通算8アンダーにするも7位タイに後退した。

　一方、日本勢では川村昌弘が2つ伸ばし通算1アンダーで43位タイに浮上。藤田寛之は1つ戻し通算イーブンパーで49位タイとしている。また、2日目も巻き返せず9オーバーで終えた石川遼は3日目でやっと石川らしいゴルフが復活。前半3バーディ・ノーボギーの“33”で3つ戻し、通算6オーバーで折り返した。

　中国で開催中の「WGC-HSBCチャンピオンズ」の3日目。昨日バーディラッシュを炸裂させ単独首位に躍り出たダスティン・ジョンソン（米国）が6ストローク伸ばし単独首位を堅守した。

　この日もジョンソンは前半からバーディを量産。1つ目のバーディを3番で奪うと続く5番から圧巻の5連続バーディを奪取。18アンダーまで伸ばし前半を折り返した。しかし後半は13番から4連続でバーディを奪取しながら10番と最終18番でダブルボギーを叩いてしまい結局パープレー。トータル10バーディ・2ダブルボギーの“63”でラウンド、通算18アンダーでホールアウトした。

　そのジョンソンを3打差で追うのは昨年の覇者イアン・ポールター（イングランド）。ポールターも昨日のジョンソンのようなバーディラッシュで9ストローク伸ばし通算15アンダーで単独2位に浮上した。続く単独3位には8ストローク伸ばしたグレアム・マクドウェル（北アイルランド）が通算14アンダーでつける。さらにローリー・マキロイ（北アイルランド）、グラハム・デラート（カナダ）、ジャスティン・ジョンソン（イングランド）の3人が通算12アンダーで並び4位タイとしている。

　一方の日本勢は藤田寛之がこの日4ストローク伸ばし通算3アンダーで33位タイに浮上。川村昌弘は2ストローク伸ばし通算1アンダー44位タイ。そして、石川遼も5バーディ・1ボギーの“68”で回り、4ストローク伸ばし通算5オーバー70位タイまで浮上させた。
